Abstract: A full translation of the main Hungarian law governing broadcasting media in force from 1996 to 2010, Act 1 of 1996 on Radio and Television Broadcasting. The translation concerns the text of the law as it was in force on January 1, 2008. The law included 11 chapters. Chapter 1, General Provisions, determined the scope of the act. Chapter 2, Principles and Rules of Broadcasting, set out regulations on issues ranging from the protection of minors to restrictions on advertising, as well as principles and regulations for public service program provision. Chapter 3 determined the regulations governing the role and practices of the National Radio and Television Board. Chapter 4 concerned public service program providers, and chapter 5 the system of the subsidization of broadcasting. Among further chapters, Chapter 6 set out the definitions and procedures for broadcasting rights (frequencies, licensing, tendering) and Chapter 8 provisions pertaining to media ownership.
