Abstract: In this statement of 9 February 2011, the international freedom of expression organisation Article XIX "welcomes the Hungarian government’s pledge to amend its media laws in line with international standards, following pressure from the international community," and presents a list of things which "genuine reform of the Hungarian media laws should include". The list includes items such as the re-organisation of the media regulation authority to ensure its independence from the government; the abolition of the ban on incitement of hatred against 'nations', 'any majority' or 'churches'; the abolition of the requirement for registration for print and internet services to start operation; and the reduction of the sanctions for violations by journalists and media of their obligations under the media law.
