Abstract: This declaration, adopted by the Committee of Ministers on 7 December 2000 at the 733rd meeting of the Ministers' Deputies, underlines the importance of respect for cultural diversity as an essential condition of human society, and the particular importance of cultural diversity in building an information and knowledge based society in the 21st Century. With an eye on the Council of Europe's tradition of protecting and fostering cultural diversity through instruments based on the European Convention on Human Rights and the European Cultural Convention, this declaration makes a number of affirmations regarding the importance of cultural diversity and the role of free expression and freedom of information, notably in audiovisual services, in expressing it, as well as regarding the role and necessity of cultural and audiovisual policies that promote and respect cultural diversity. The declaration highlights the role of public broadcasting, as well as of the education and training of professionals and users of new services, in safeguarding cultural diversity, and calls on member states to "examine ways of sustaining and promoting cultural and linguistic diversity in the new global environment, at all levels".
