Abstract: An international partnership mission of freedom of expression and media development groups released this statement about its findings regarding the enactment and implementation of the new Hungarian media laws. After speaking with lawyers, journalists, professional and civil society associations, the government and the media authorities, the mission warned that the new laws are having a chilling effect on press freedom and threaten to do the same abroad. The mission, which included Freedom House, Index on Censorship, the International Press Institute, the European Federation of Journalists and eight other groups, highlighted issues of source protection, judicial review of Media Authority decisions, the new licensing regime and the reorganization of the public media, and warned of “a perfect storm that threatens the future of independent journalism in Hungary”.
